New shoes this month:

The Hoka Challenger

Competitor Magazine's "Best Of" shoe, the Hoka Challenger ATR has the light-weight, smooth-riding characteristics of the Clifton, complemented by a more aggressive outsole and increased support in the upper to create an all-terrain shoe for varied surfaces.

The Saucony
Kinvara 6!

The new Kinvara 6 is just a few engines short of a turbojet, but you might be fooled when you lace up a pair. Its best-ever lacing system delivers the optimal midfoot fit, and a new breathable mesh delivers a cool breeze while you're blazing the course. It sits atop the same "Powergrid" enhanced midsole as the previous edition, because, well... it's just that good.

New Balance 870 v4

A very popular light-stability shoe, for runners and walkers who enjoy a little support in a shoe, while keeping it light. This year's update is lighter and more comfortable than ever.

Karma Kits!

Have you heard about Karma Kits? They are self-sustaining five gallon buckets filled with all the necessities a cyclist or hiker might need to get home safely. The "karma" part is this: if you take anything from the bucket while out on the trail, you bring the same thing back to replace it later. No money needs to change hands, as it's based on the honor system.

Gio back from the Boston Marathon!

Athletic Feat team member Gio shares his Boston adventure:

"I am finally back at work here at Athletic Feat and I figured it would be great to write about this year's Boston Marathon.

The race was definitely not the easiest way to be introduced to the marathon, but you just have to go in with your head up high. I'll be honest, I wasn't super excited to be freezing in the morning waiting with the thousands of other runners at the Athlete's Village, but I'll tell you something, to see everyone there that has worked so hard was very inspiring and I knew that everyone else was going to be giving it their all out there, regardless of the weather. It was hovering around 40 degrees when I first arrived at 7:30 am. The clouds were pretty ominous but I was confident the rain would hold up. Unfortunately, mother nature had other plans and around 8 am it began to rain ...

Fun Recipe

Risotto with Asparagus

From the Food Network

  • 2 bunches thick asparagus (about 2 pounds)
  • 1 sprig fresh thyme or lemon thyme
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 large shallot, diced
  • 2 cups arborio rice
  • Kosher salt
  • 1/3 cup dry white wine
  • 2 teaspoons grated lemon zest
  • Freshly ground pepper
  • 1/3 cup grated parmesan cheese
  • 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1 head Bibb lettuce, cut into strips
  • 8 ounces robiola or taleggio cheese, thinly sliced
  • Extra-virgin olive oil, for drizzling

  1. Peel the bottom third of the asparagus stalks with a vegetable peeler. Snap each stalk where it breaks naturally; reserve 4 of the peeled bottoms for crostini (below). Thinly slice 6 asparagus bottoms and place the rest of the bottoms in a saucepan with 8 cups water and the thyme to make asparagus broth; bring to a simmer.

  2. Heat 2 tablespoons butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Add the shallot and cook, stirring, until translucent, about 2 minutes. Add the rice and cook, stirring, until glossy, about 1 minute. Add 1 1/4 teaspoons salt. Pour in the wine and stir until absorbed. Stir in 1/2 cup of the asparagus broth until absorbed (use a ladle to add the broth, keeping the solids in the pan). Continue to add broth in 1/2-cup increments, stirring constantly and allowing the liquid to be absorbed before adding more, about 10 minutes. (You should have about half the broth left.) Stir in the sliced asparagus bottoms and the lemon zest. Add the remaining broth, 1/2 cup at a time, until the rice is just tender, 5 to 8 more minutes.

  3. Meanwhile, place the asparagus tips in a large skillet, cover with water and season with salt and pepper. Simmer over medium-high heat until just tender, about 5 minutes.

  4. Add the remaining 2 tablespoons butter, the parmesan and lemon juice to the risotto. Stir in the lettuce, remove from the heat and season with salt. Divide among bowls, top with the robiola and season with pepper. Drizzle the asparagus tips with olive oil and spoon over the risotto.
