Earthquake Relief Fund

AUGUST was a difficult and traumatic month for Napa, and we want to extend our thoughts and well wishes to all those affected by the earthquake. On a personal note, we would like to thank everybody for the the kind words, the support, the encouragement, and all the people who helped us clean up the mess and re-open in just one day, we feel very blessed. Most of the businesses in Redwood Plaza have re-opened by now, and we are so thankful that they were able to do so. We know that other businesses around Napa were hit harder, and we hope they can recover soon as well.

In an effort to help those most affected in the community, we have decided to donate 100% of the Napa Half Marathon net proceeds to a new earthquake relief fund just set up by the Napa Valley Vintners association, called the Napa Valley Community Disaster Relief Fund. You can find more information at www.napahalf.com/relief-fund.html, and you can even donate directly to the fund if you would like.

The Half Marathon is Sunday, September 28th, and starts at Skyline Park. Signup for a beautiful run through the vineyards, and you will be contributing to the relief effort in and around Napa.

Information and registration at www.napahalf.com. Check out the swag page, each runner receives a tech t-shirt, a hand-designed finisher's medal, and a bottle of California wine!

Congratulations to the Athletic Feat 5K Training Group!

Our summer 5K training group bravely completed the Dionysus Dash 5K at the Hess Winery. Hills galore and lots of smiles afterward! A very beautiful first 5K, but by no means an easy one... We are proud of your accomplishment!

We will be starting another training group in the near future, it is such a fun way to meet a new group of friends and discover how much fun running can be. Stay tuned!

New this month

This shoe is really a revelation. Although Brooks likes to think of its "Pure" line as more minimal shoes, this trail shoe is very, very comfortable. Light on your foot, a perfect sock-like wrap-around fit, and very nicely cushioned. Yet the rock plate is solid, and traction is excellent with grippy rubber hex lugs.
The NEW BALANCE 880 v4

The fourth iteration of the 880 is lighter than the v3, but quite a bit more cushioned. With two layers of foam and a midsole wrap cradling the foot, runners will feel more comfort and toe spring. This shoe has evolved very well from the previous generation.

Chicken Pitas With Sun-Dried Tomato Spread

From prevention.com
By Joanna Sayago Golub, senior editor, Runner's World.   Recipe by Matthew Kadey, MS, RD

Sun-dried tomatoes are a concentrated source of lycopene. This antioxidant has been shown to reduce your risk of certain cancers, including prostate cancer. While sun-dried tomatoes packed in oil contain more fat and calories than those packed in water, that added oil is needed to give the spread a smooth, rich consistency. Double the recipe for the tomato spread and keep the extra in a container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. Use it on other sandwiches or in place of hummus as a vegetable dip.

Total Time: 35 min
Servings: 4

  • 10 oil-packed sun-dried tomatoes
  • 1 cup sliced roasted red peppers
  • 2 Tbsp water, plus more as needed
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1/4 cup walnuts
  • 1/4 cup fresh mint
  • 2 Tbsp fresh oregano
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper Salt
  • 4 (6") whole wheat pitas, cut in half
  • 8 oz cooked rotisserie chicken
  • 1 1/2 cup arugula
  • 1 avocado, sliced

  1. Soak the sun-dried tomatoes in a bowl of warm water for 30 minutes.

  2. In a food processor, combine the tomatoes, 1/3 cup of the red peppers, the water, garlic, walnuts, mint, oregano, cayenne, and salt to taste. Process until smooth, scraping down the bowl as necessary. If the spread is too thick, add more water, 1 teaspoon at a time.

  3. Place 1 tablespoon of the tomato spread in each pita half. Stuff each pita with an equal amount of the chicken, arugula, avocado, and remaining 2/3 cup red pepper.
