Want to run for more than just applause?

A few weeks ago, we met the fantastic team behind this brand new event: a 5K run to raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer, a disease that affects 1 in 6 men. In addition to a great cause, it's a wonderful way to sign up for some exercise and beautiful Napa Valley scenery.
Blue Ribbon 5K

Blue Ribbon 5K The 5K run will take place on September 8, 2013. The Blue Ribbon Run Team, three local sisters from Napa, have been involved in prostate cancer awareness after three men in their family were diagnosed. 100% of the net proceeds will go directly to help fund prostate cancer research, early detection testing, treatments and potential cures.

You can also sign up for the race in person at Athletic Feat, and receive 10% off your entire purchase.

Fun Summer Recipe

Somen Noodle Salad

There are many ways to personalize this fresh Japanese-style noodle salad, with your favorite vegetables, optional fish, or meat, etc. Served chilled, it's a very refreshing dish on a summer day.

1 package somen noodles
1 package kamaboko (Japanese fish cake) or protein of your choice
greens of your choice (spinach, arugula, kale, romaine, etc.)

green/spring onions, 1 - 2 stalks
ginger, about 1/2 inch
carrots, 1/4 cup shredded
1 egg

1 lemon
1 tablespoon sesame oil (get the toasted sesame oil from Asian supermarkets)
1 teaspoon maple syrup or sugar
1 teaspoon rice vinegar
1 Tablespoon soy sauce

  1. Place bed of greens on the plate.
2. Cook somen noodles in boiling water for 5 minutes (or according to package instructions) then rinse under cold water until itís cold. At this point you can toss them lightly with some sesame oil to prevent the noodles from sticking.
3. Take handful of somen noodles and put over bed of greens.
  1. Beat egg in a bowl and add a touch of salt and sugar. Generously coat the skillet with oil and fry the egg so that it resembles a think crepe. Remove when slightly cool and cut them into match stick size.
2. Slice the kamaboko into roughly 1/4" slices.
3. Chop green onions.
4. Shred carrots.
5. Mince ginger.
6. Sprinkle the garnish over the somen noodles.
  1. Squeeze juice of 1 lemon. (alternate: lime is good too)
2. Add the soy sauce, rice vinegar, maple syrup and sesame oil.
3. Mix well and adjust to your liking.

Pour about 6 tablespoons of dressing over each salad plate and enjoy!
