Hydration

Hydration is more important than ever during very hot days like we've had this past week.

"Hydration is important because the body is comprised mostly of water, and the proper balance between water and electrolytes in our bodies really determines how most of our systems function, including nerves and muscles," says Larry Kenney, PhD, a professor of physiology and kinesiology at Penn State.

Approximately 45 to 50 percent of daily water intake comes from drinking fluids, about 35 percent from eating food and the rest from metabolism. Vegetables and fruits are the most hydrating (e.g., lettuce is 95 percent water). But we also get a lot from meat, as well as soup, juice, soda, milk and even coffee.

For facts and myths about hydration, check out our extensive page on hydration.

Chi Running Workshop   Workshop

Saturday, July 20, 2013, at Athletic Feat - SPACE IS LIMITED

Chi Running has helped many people, from beginners, to cross country runners to triathletes. The Chi Running approach is an elegant and enjoyable program that builds a healthy body, instead of breaking it down from misuse or overuse.

Aracely Areas The instructor is Aracely Areas. Aracely is a Senior ChiRunning instructor. As a runner for over 15 years, she experienced the runners' challenges of injuries and pain. She will never forget the summer day in June 1999 when she ran 5 miles with Danny Dreyer, founder of ChiRunning. During that run, she felt so much joy that her running philosophy changed forever. Since then she has completed 20 injury-free marathons; assisted Danny Dreyer in workshops and teacher trainings; and also earned a Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do. Aracely teaches with passion and respect. She loves to assist seasoned runners in developing better form that leads to greater ease and speed; as well as to help newbies start off on the right foot (pun intended!)

Fun Summer Recipe

Black Bean, Tomato and Corn Salad

This simple, refreshing salad comes compliments of the Eugene Register-Guard newspaper:

The dressing:

  • 1/3 cup olive oil
  • 1/2 tspn chili powder
  • 1/2 tspn ground cumin
  • 1/3 cup lime juice
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/2 tspn sugar
  • 1 tspn salt
  • 1/2 tspn dried oregano
Combine first 3 ingredients over low heat in small saucepan for 3-4 minutes. Cool to room temp. Then combine with rest of dressing ingredients. Mix well or shake in a jar. Salad:
  • 2 cans black beans, rinsed and drained
  • 4 cups corn kernels (fresh, frozen or canned)
  • 2 cups halved cherry tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup red onions (optional)
  • 3/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1 avocado, cubed
Combine dressing mix and salad. Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour if you can wait that long! Enjoy!
