Marathon Trials and Tribulations

The Napa Valley Marathon was my first marathon ever. As this year's event approaches, I've been thinking back to that first run. At the time I didn't know all that much about training yet. I had heard of the importance of nutrition and carbo loading... and I decided the best way to carbo-load was to make a pot of pasta and have it for breakfast. I can hear some of you laughing already, every distance runner knows the outcome of that breakfast.

I have studied and changed my training significantly since that first one. I wish everyone tremendous success in your upcoming events, whatever the distance may be. Please feel free to stop by and ask for advice. I dare say I may have learned the hard way!

What's New at the Store

A lot of new product this month!   In addition to new apparel from Prana and Nike, the following new shoes have just come out in the past week or two:

A truly new and unique type of shoe, it is designed specifically for mid-foot running. The shoe is ultra-light (6.2 oz for a woman's size 8.5) and features a 0mm heel-to-toe drop, with all the padding and dynamic structure (wave plate) in the midfoot section of the shoe. You should come try it on, it feels like nothing else out there.

The Ravenna is a shoe for the mild pronator, in-between a neutral and a traditional support shoe. The fourth generation Ravenna brings a little more cushion and a bit more flex than the previous iteration.

The Cascadia is probably the world's most popular neutral trail shoe, built for ultra-marathons which makes it ultra-comfortable for any distance. The Cascadia 8 is a bit lighter than its predecessor, and features a new midsole and other incremental improvements to this icon of trail running.

Improving upon the LunarEclipse+ 2 with an engineered mesh and updated Flywire cables, the LunarEclipse+ 3 provides an ultra-lightweight feel, stability and breathability in a flexible fit. This shoe is very, very light for a cushioned stability shoe, weighing in at only 8.9 oz for a woman's size 8.

A minor upgrade, the Hurricane 15's upper has been upgraded with a heel-locking technology that provides a more secure and stable fit. It remains Saucony's most luxurious and supportive stability shoe, surprisingly light (only 9.7 oz W8) for such a plush and comfortable shoe.

The Mirage 3 is for runners seeking a very lightweight (7.5 oz), responsive ride with a touch of guidance. The beveled, decoupled heel provides a smooth, efficient transition. For version 3, the forefoot is re-engineered with deeper, more substantial flex grooves.

The INOV-8 F-LITE 215:

This is a woman-specific version of the well-known F-Lite 230. Ideal for CrossFit and gym workouts, it features among other things reinforced lateral and medial elements for rope climbing. Very light (7.0 oz for a woman's size 8) with a 6mm heel-to-toe drop and a little more cushioning than the F-Lite 195.

... and the latest closeouts

With these upgrades above come the latest closeouts of the previous season's styles. The remaining sizes of the following models are now on sale:

    Brooks Ravenna 3
    Brooks Cascadia 7
    Nike LunarEclipse+ 2
    Saucony Hurricane 14
